KOTA KINABALU: A 59-year-old Japanese tourist was killed while her husband was injured after a double-storey ferry reversed and knocked them with its propellers at a resort while they were kayaking yesterday.

The deceased, identified as Reiko Tanaka, was killed instantly after she was run over by the 18-seater ferry, believed to have reversed onto them, around 12.50pm.

Her 67-year-old husband survived but suffered fracture on his left leg.

Acting city police chief Deputy Superintendent Peter Umbuas said the woman died on the spot after suffering serious injuries on her chest.

He said the ferry had just sent off resort staff to work when the incident happened.

“Police are still investigating and will get the boat operator’s statement to assist in the case,” he said yesterday.

“We will not hesitate to make an arrest if negligence is involved,” he added.

The woman’s body has been sent for a post-mortem while the injured husband has been sent to the hospital for treatment.

It was learnt that the couple were expected to be in the state capital for a week after arriving from Japan on Sunday.
