KUALA LUMPUR: The good practices of high-performing schools will be extended to underperforming schools, said Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
Muhyiddin, who is also Education Minister, said the Education Ministry was identifying factors or good practices implemented in high-performance schools and selected classrooms which lead to their success.
“These good practices can be emulated by schools in rural or city areas,” he said when met by reporters at Sekolah Kebangsaan Sentul 1, here yesterday.
Muhyiddin spent about two hours there to celebrate the school’s excellent achievement in the 2011 Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) examination, whereby 41 of 207 of its students who sat for it scored 5As.
Education director-general Datuk Seri Abdul Ghafar Mahmud, when announcing the examination results yesterday morning, said this year’s overall UPSR achievement was recorded as the best in four years according to the National Grade Average (NGA).
A total of 46,012 out of 485,160 candidates scored all As, but this was a drop from 10.02 per cent last year to 9.48 per cent this year.
Meanwhile, the achievement gap between rural and city schools was reduced by 0.01 from 0.16 NGA last year to 0.15 thisyear, following various efforts carried out by the ministry to help rural schools.
Muhyiddin said the ministry would continue to implement initiatives to increase the performance of rural schools so that the gap would be further reduced.
The deputy prime minister also took the opportunity to congratulate students who fared well in their UPSR exams, as well as thanked teachers who assisted them in their preparations. — Bernama
