PUTRAJAYA: The country’s film industry will move another step forward once the Pinewood Iskandar Malaysia Studios in Johor is completed next year, Information Communication and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim said.

Rais said high quality films can be produced in the country since the studio would be equipped with state-of-the-art facilities and technology to produce films of exceptional quality.

“By next year, we expect the country’s film industry to take a major stride forward to achieve regional and international status due to the presence of an established foreign studio,” he told reporters at the 24th Malaysian Film Festival (FFM 24) held at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre(PICC) here on Sunday night.

Pinewood IskandarMalaysiais a venture between Iskandar Malaysia Studios Sdn Bhd, fully owned by Khazanah Nasional Bhd and world renown Pinewood Shepperton PLC, to boost IskandarMalaysia’s status as a regional and international film production hub, said Rais.

Rais added that the Malaysian film industry has not only seen vast development in terms of presentation and quality of the cinematography, it has also expanded in terms of marketing.

“Malaysian made films like ‘Hikayat Merong Mahawangsa’ and ‘KL Gangster’ have reached technical aspects that we can be proud of,” he said. — Bernama
