KUCHING: A well-meaning villager, who offered to send a theft suspect to the police station using his motorcycle, was left red-faced when the latter jumped off the machine and escaped.

The incident happened at a village in Petra Jaya when the suspect, a local youth, was spotted exiting the house of another resident carrying a digital camera, a laptop and an iPad around 8pm on Tuesday.

A friend of the resident trailed the youth back to his house not far away before making a citizen’s arrest with the help of other villagers.

While the group waited for the police to arrive, one villager apparently became impatient and offered to send the thief to the police station on his motorcycle, and did so after making sure the suspect’s hands were securely bound.

Along the way, however, the suspect hopped off the machine and took off on foot into a secondary jungle leaving the red-faced but well-meaning villager to continue to the police station to report what had happened.

A police team subsequently headed to the suspect’s house but was unable to locate him as he was believed to have gone into hiding.
