KUALA LUMPUR: The situation in flood-stricken areas in Kelantan has improved yesterday afternoon with the number of victims dropped slightly to 1,817 from 502 families while the evacuation centres reduced to 22 from 32 yesterday morning.

All five evacuation centres in Kuala Krai and Machang have been closed as floodwaters receded in the two districts, said a state flood operations room spokesman.

He said the Pasir Mas district still had the most number of flood evacuation centres opened at 11 while the water level at Sungai Golok in Rantau Panjang was still above the dangerous level.

More roads have been reopened leaving only eight still impassable traffic, he added.

The roads, which are still closed to all traffic, are Jalan Machang-Pangkal Meleret-Wakaf Bata in Machang; Jalan Pohon Tanjung-Meranti (Pasir Mas), Jalan Pohon Tanjung-Rantau Panjang (Jalan Lama) Kampung Siram; Jalan Tanah Merah-Kusial-Kampung Ipoh (Tanah Merah); and Jalan Cabang 4/Kampung Jambu/Meranti (Tumpat). Jalan Pohon Tanjung-Pasir Pekan in Tumpat is only passable to heavy vehicles.

In Kuantan, 11 people from two families from Kampung Chendor Baru near Cherating who were evacuated yesterday were still taking refuge at the Kampung Chendor Community Hall as their houses were still inundated.

Although the water level at four main rivers in Pahang has dropped below the danger level, the people living along the rivers should be on the alert, said a Pahang police flood operations room spokesman. — Bernama
