SIBU: Most longhouses in Dudong areas have Internet access, and there is no longer a digital divide between the urban and rural folks, assured Lanang MP Datuk Tiong Thai King.

“There are about 190 longhouses in Dudong, including the smaller ones, and from my knowledge, through my visit there (to about 135 longhouses), they can access the Internet.

“The thing is, I can even use my handphone, and there is 3G service available. So you see, connecting to the Internet is no longer a problem even for those longhouses located further away,” Tiong, who is also Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) chairman told reporters after officiating at the Sarawak ICT Expo 2011 at Sibu Trade and Exhibition Centre here yesterday.

He was asked on accessibility to Internet for longhouse folks in Dudong and whether there is a glaring gap between urban and rural folks in term of Internet usage.

Organising chairman of ‘E-waste Recycling Campaign 2011’, Wong Ing Ang meanwhile, substantiated Tiong’s claim, saying that so long as there is handphone connectivity, Internet access is not a problem.

Asked to comment on Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Seri Chor Chee Heung’s announcement that cabinet had approved the Green Neighbourhood guidelines and Low Carbon Cities Framework, Tiong said the council was all the while committed to greening Sibu.

Chor was quoted to have said ‘little things’ such as planting more trees could go a long way to reducing pollutions in the country.

Meanwhile, Tiong lamented that fund constraint had made them unable to reach their target on tree-planting.

“But we always encourage the private sector to help SMC adopt certain parks and beautify them to green up the environment.

“As for Computer Sales and Association Sarawak (CSSA) Sibu branch, we would like them not only to set up the e-waste collection centre but also beautify its surroundings,” he said.

He revealed that SMC had received accolades for its efforts in greening the riverine town.
