PENAMPANG: A group of 20 parents from Penampang staged a peaceful protest to object to the existence of ‘Seksualiti Merdeka 2011’ that promotes the rights and voice of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans-gender (LGBT) community in the country.

Liew Yaw Kong, one of the parents who led the peaceful gathering in front of the Penampang police headquarters yesterday, said the group was urging the government to ensure such an event would also be banned in Sabah.

He said they disagreed with the action of more than 10 non-governmental organisations (NGOS) that worked towards promoting the so-called human rights of the LGBT community.

Liew said they feared such lifestyles would negatively influence the young generation to free sex and related social-ills.

The peaceful gathering was held at 10.30am for 15 minutes before the group filed their protest at the district police station.

Yesterday’s peaceful gathering was made after the federal government placed a blanket ban on the ‘Seksualiti Merdeka 2011’ event that was planned to be held at the Annexe Gallery in Kuala Lumpur from Dec 2 till 13.
