KUALA LUMPUR: Umno Permanent Chairman Datuk Paduka Badruddin Amiruldin today said that the fighting spirit inculcated among Umno members at the recently-concluded Umno General Assembly 2011 must be extended to Umno members at the grassroot.

He said the responsibility was now left to the delegates who attended the assembly to ensure that the party president Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak’s message would be observed by all Umno members nationwide.

“We don’t want to be in high spirit just during the assembly, but it should be continued until the 13th general election. So, it is compulsory for the delegates who attended the assembly and who had taken the pledge to be loyal to the party to explain the president’s message to the people at the grassroot.

“Go on and organise massive assemblies at the division or branch level to explain the president’s message. Carry out as many programmes to reach out to the voters to ensure victory for Umno and Barisan Nasional (BN) in the next general election,” he told Bernama when contacted here yesterday.

He also called on Umno members to focus on efforts to fish for votes and not on the possible candidates for the general election.

On PAS’ 10 Agendas if given the mandate to rule the country, Badruddin said the opposition could announce anything, but the fact was that many of their promises made during the 2008 general election were hardly kept.

“The people must think wisely so that they won’t be cheated again by those unkept promises. Umno and BN are more consistent in keeping their promises,” he said.

Yesterday, PAS President Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang was reported as saying that the party would implement its 10 Agendas to establish a welfare state if given the mandate to rule the country.

Badruddin also agreed with the remarks made by former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad that BN is in a good position to win the next general election, which may take place early next year.

He said Dr Mahathir would not simply make such a statement but must have done his research on all aspects, including the ‘mood’ of the people.

“Dr Mahathir is a very matured politician. He understands and knows what’s good and what’s not. So, we should take his words as guidelines,” he said. — Bernama
