Kuching team retain table tennis title

KUCHING: The Kuching Division Table Tennis Association (KDTTA) successfully retained the overall championship title for the 11th consecutive time at the 51st Sarawak Premium Ark Enterprise Inter-Division Table Tennis Championship.

Led by Kuching’s working team manager Helena Wee, the team comprising 55 players and 15 officials clinched the Tan Thiam Kee Challenge Trophy, which was donated by Table Tennis Association of Sarawak president Michael Teo Kim Huat, after hauling a total of 15 gold, 11 silver and 16 bronze medals during the five-day event which ended on Wednesday.

A total of 452 matches were played comprising 23 categories which saw the men and women singles won by Chai Kian Beng and Kueh Wan May of Kuching while Rayford Kho and Wendy Lau, also from Kuching, won the Boys and Girls U-17 categories respectively.

Other winners were Andy Jong (Kuching) in the Boys U-15, Foo Wui Jia of Miri in the Girls U-15 and U-13 categories, Calvin Chieng Chun in the Boys U-13

.Joel Chen Yu Chen and Elicia Tsai won the Boys and Girls U-10 respectively.

Meanwhile the men’s Veteran 45, Veteran 55 and women’s Veteran 40 saw Ling Kah Nge of Sibu, Chai Min Ngo of Kuching and Chua Yeo Fong of Miri emerged champions respectively whereas Kuching lad Matteus Aloysius won the non-Chinese men category.

In the men’s and women’s doubles, Kuching emerged yet again as champions through Chai Kian Beng and Chai Kian Peng for the men and Kueh Wan May and Wendy Lau Jun Zhen for the women.

In the team category, Kuching team were unbeatable in the men, women, girls, and men non-Chinese team category while the boys team and men veteran team finished first-runner up in these two categories.

About 300 players from Kuching, Samarahan, Sarikei, Sibu, Mukah, Bintulu, Miri and Limbang took part at the championship at MBKS Indoor Stadium in Pending.

The next edition will be held in December next year in Miri.
