KOTA KINABALU: A restaurant worker did not think that anything was amiss when a man approached him for a lighter to light his cigarette two days ago.
He politely told the man that he did not carry a lighter.
But he panicked when the man suddenly pulled out a knife and demanded for his wallet.
Without questioning, he quickly handed over his wallet and the man fled away with the victim’s RM400 cash.
City police chief Assistant Commissioner Ahmad Sofi Zakaria in disclosing this yesterday said the 26-year-old suspect, a foreigner, was apprehended by the Mobile Police Vehicle personnel who were patrolling the Kampung Likas area.
“In the 9.45am incident, the victim caught the policemen’s attention by shouting after the suspect fled the area. However, the money is missing believed to be taken by the suspect’s accomplice who escaped.
Ahmad Sofi told reporters yesterday that the suspect was apprehended about 100 metres from the location where he robbed the victim.
“We found a knife from the suspect, which we believed was used in the robbery. Investigation also revealed that the suspect had handed over the cash to his accomplice, who is still at large,” he said.
The suspect, is currently remanded for investigation under Section 397 of the Penal Code, for armed robbery, which carries a maximum of 20 years jail, and liable to fine, or whipping, upon conviction.
“The suspect also tested positive for syabu,” said Ahmad Sofi.
