KOTA SAMARAHAN: A one kilometre stretch of Jalan Semawang in Kota Samarahan was made impassable by half a metre deep floodwater following more than 24 hours of heavy rain since Saturday.

Villagers staying in the area had to use the alternative road from Jalan Kampung Tanjung Parang to avoid the flooded road.

A villager known as Yusof said vehicles like cars and motorbikes could not go through the road.

“Heavy rain since last Saturday caused the flood with many low-lying areas affected,” he said yesterday.

Many vehicles were left stranded, he added.

He said villages in Asajaya and Kota Samarahan were also hit by the flash flood on Sunday.

The flood was made worst by the high tide.

Some crops planted in low-lying areas were submerged.

“If the rain continues for a few days, the water level will rise. I believe some of the villagers need to move to a safer place,” Yusof added.

Meanwhile villagers of Kampung Sindang Baru in Kota Samarahan were worried as their area was hit by flash floods every raining season.

Tambi Pawi who hails from the village said they had to be alert and move their things to higher ground every year.

“Sadly, the authority shows no attempt to solve the flood woes here,” he commented.
