A total of 4,820 flood victims from 1,120 families had been evacuated to 16 relief centres throughout Sarawak as of press time yesterday.

The State Flood Relief Operations Room said seven villages here were affected by flood since three days ago and so far some 2,274 people from 483 families had been evacuated to safer locations.

Among them, it said, were 458 people from Kampung Beradek who were sheltered at Surau Kampung Beradek; a family from Kampung Bratan Asah and 38 residents of Kampung Semariang Batu sheltering at Dewan Semariang Batu, 111 people from Kampung Pengkalan Bau who had to camp out at the nearest high ground, 138 people from Kampung Tupong Tengah/Jaya sheltering at SK Tupong and Kuching North City Commission and 94 people from Kampung Semilang sheltering at the Kampung Semilang mosque and its Kemas kindergarten.

Meanwhile, a survey done at Kampung Simpok in Padawan saw some flood victims had returned home.

The water level at the village had been rising since Monday, where a total of 287 families were evacuated to the relief centre at SK St Peter.

According to Kampung Simpok village head John Jingut, the village has more than 410 houses with 1,435 people, and that most of the villagers are Bidayuhs. He noted that assistance in the form of rice and sugar was distributed by the Welfare Department yesterday.

In Samarahan, 13 villages were affected by the flood with 1,964 villagers from 517 families evacuated to 10 relief centres in the area.

In addition, 65 people from Kampung Asajaya Ulu and eight from Kampung Serphan Ulu are sheltering at Asajaya Sports Complex, 1,012 people from Kampung Semera are taking shelter at SK Haji Kelali, 169 people from Kampung Rengawan taking refuge at Kampung Rengawan mosque and 78 people from Kampung Terasi sheltering at SK Kampung Terasi.

Meanwhile, 210 people from Kampung Seruyuk are putting up at its mosque, while 20 people from Kampung Rimba Padi are sheltering at its mosque, 40 families from Jemukan sheltering at Jemukan hall, 32 people from Kampung Lubuk Ria putting up at their relatives’ homes, 26 people from Ensebang Simunjan sheltering at SMK Simunjan, 137 people from Kampung Pelandok, 39 people from Kampung Jaie and 168 people from Kampung Sadong Jaya are sheltering at the resource centre of Sadong Jaya mosque.

Besides that, 150 residents from 37 families at Pangkalan Pantu in Sri Aman had been evacuated to SK Chung Hua Pantu.

On the other hand, residents from eight longhouses and shophouses in Sibu and Kapit, including Rh Janting, Rh Kusau, Rh Mujah, Rh. Gansau, Rh Sibat, Kedai Sim Kok Heng, Kedai Yiaw Kun Heng and Klinik Bukit Arip, had been evacuated to SK Bukit Arip.

The operation room also confirmed no fatality had been reported in the state from the floods since three years ago.

It also said all government agencies and departments involved in the State Flood Relief Operation had taken appropriate action to assist the flood victims.

About RM94,000 had been spent on food assistance for flood evacuees as of yesterday.

This was revealed by Welfare, Women and Family Development Minister Datuk Fatimah Abdullah after her official visit to Kampung Beradek and Kampung Semilang in Muara Tebas yesterday.

In Beradek and nearby Semilang, a total of 300 bags of food were distributed to the evacuees who put up at the community halls there.

She also announced that cash donation would be distributed to those affected by the flood soon.

Reading out the latest statistics, Fatimah said as of yesterday Kuching recorded a total of 2,274 flood victims , Sri Aman (150), Sibu (432) and Kota Samrahan (1,964) bringing the total number of victims to 4,820.
