Member opposes move to develop club land

KOTA KINABALU: A life member of the Royal Sabah Turf Club (RSTC), Allen Ding, has expressed strong opposition to the motion to develop the club’s land at the former race course in Tanjung Aru in joint venture with prospective developer(s).

He has also voiced his dissatisfaction with the management committee’s proposal to amend the constitution of the club.

In view of this, Ding urged all RSTC members to attend and reject both motions at the club’s annual general meeting (AGM) to be held today at 5pm at Shangri-La’s Tanjung Aru Resort & Spa.

Ding pointed out that the motions to be tabled at the upcoming AGM was only put up on the notice boards at the club house in Tanjung Aru and at the Tambalang race course a few days before the AGM.

The first motion concerns the conferment of life membership to full members, the second to seek sanction for the management committee to develop the Tanjung Aru race course and the third relates to a proposal to amend the constitution of RSTC.

Ding stressed that it was inappropriate and unreasonable for the management committee to do so since the 12 management committee members have been found to have breached their fiduciary duty by the Kota Kinabalu High Court and were ordered by the court to repay RM1.76 million plus interest at eight per cent and legal fee to the club, which has reached a staggering amount of RM2.40 million to date.

“They still haven’t repaid the money and instead submitted an appeal to the Court of Appeal and are currently awaiting judgment.”

Ding opines that since the judge has defaulted the management committee, the latter have no credibility whatsoever to propose the joint development plan for the former Tanjung Aru racecourse.

In addition, the 22-acre plot of land at Tanjung Aru is the RSTC’s last asset, he said.

“They should wait for the Court of Appeal’s decision before proposing such motion. It is highly ill-timed and inappropriate for them to make such proposal at this critical period.”
