KOTA KINABALU: The police are fully prepared to assist the public or other agencies in dealing with possible flood at high risk areas across the country, including Sabah.

Internal Security and Public Order Department director Datuk Salleh Mat Rasid said the flood situation in four affected states, namely Sabah, Sarawak, Johor and Pahang were subsiding.

However, the department will continue to be on high alert and ready to mobilize its men and resources to assist flood victims should the bad weather return.

“Based on forecast, the weather will be on our side… It is just that we will continue face high tide that is expected to continue for another day,” he said, yesterday.

He was speaking at a dialogue with police officers in conjunction with his visit at the General Operations Force (PGA) Camp in Kinarut.

“The police will always be ready to face any possibilities towards the end of the year, and I will constantly monitor (the situation) from Bukit Aman.

“As for the flood operation in Sabah, I will delegate to the state PGA brigade commander for coordinating the efforts with the state police commissioner. We will provide assistance in terms of personnel and assets whenever needed,” he said.

Meanwhile, he advised the public to be careful when, and if possible avoid conducting any water activities during high tide and strong winds.

He said water level along the coastal areas was expected to remain high especially in Samarahan, Sarawak. In Sabah the highest water level was expected along Tanjung Lipat.

“The water level in Kudat has started to go down, but the high tide is expected to hit Tanjung Lipat. I advise the public to always listen to the radio or other media to keep track of the flood situation.

“Make sure not to let young children play in the water, whether it is flood or high tide,” he said, adding that the unusual high tide had not claimed any casualties so far.
