More flood victims evacuated in Pasir Puteh

KUALA LUMPUR: More flood victims have been evacuated in Pasir Puteh, Kota Baharu with 232 people sheltered at relief centres as of 4pm yesterday compared to 120 people in the morning.

A Kelantan flood operations room spokesman said the flood situation in Pasir Puteh worsened following intermittent heavy rain since morning.

“The evacuees are from 55 families,” he said.

He added that all the evacuees were sheltered at three schools, Sekolah Kebangsaan Bukit Awang, Sekolah Kebangsaan Kanpung Nara and Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Kamil.

Sungai Golok was reported to have breached the danger level with the depth reading 9.89 metres (danger level 9 metres) at 4pm yesterday while water levels were rising at all other major rivers in Kelantan.

In Terengganu, the number of flood victims in Besut and Setiu dropped to 151 people at 5pm yesterday compared to 583 people in the morning.

According to the state government’s flood portal, only six flood relief centres remained in operation, three each in Besut and Setiu.

In Besut, 332 people out of 460 flood victims housed at shelters in the morning were allowed to return to their homes while in Setiu, only 23 out of 123 victims remained at shelters.

The water levels at all major rivers in Terengganu were reported to be at normal levels.

In Johor baharu, the number of flood victims sheltered at three relief centres in Segamat remained at 60 people.

According to the National Security Council’s portal, the 60 people from 10 families were being sheltered at relief centres in Kampung Spangloi, Kampung Batu Badak and Kampung Pogoh.

Meanwhile the Drainage and Irrigation Department’s portal warned that the water levels of Sungai Muar at Buloh Kasap, Segamat and Sungai Bekok at Empangan Bekok, Batu Pahat were above the danger level and advised people living in the vicinity to be on the alert. — Bernama
