LANGKAWI: The Langkawi International Airport management wants the authorities to allow more chartered flights to the legendary resort island to increase foreign tourist arrivals.

Its manager, Abdul Halim Othman, said it was collaborating with the Langkawi Development Authority (Lada) to rope in more airline companies to initiate direct flights or chartered flights to Langkawi.

Among the companies currently providing chartered flights to the island are Finnair of Finland and Scat Air of Kazakhstan, he told Bernama here yesterday.

Apart from that, there were 21 scheduled flights provided by Malaysia Airline Systems Bhd, AirAsia Bhd, Firefly Sdn Bhd and Berjaya Air Sdn Bhd, and Silkair Pte Ltd from Singapore, he said.

On the number of arrivals, he said there were 1.42 million last year compared with 1.3 million in 2010. — Bernama
