KUALA LUMPUR: The Netherlands Maritime Institute of Technology (NMIT) in Educity in Iskandar Malaysia, Johor is well-placed to produce competent home-grown personnel for the maritime industry.

Pelorus Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Capt Razali Yaacob said the institute, which began operations in May 2011, will initially offer diploma courses in Maritime Transport Management, Port Management, Shipping Management and Maritime HSSE (Health, Safety, Security and Environment).

“What we have developed at NMIT is a hybrid programme. There are many places in the world that offer some kind of programme, but not at the diploma level and in the way we do it at NMIT.

“There is a mix of theory and practical in terms of the visit and exposure that we bring to the students,” he told reporters after a briefing on the NMIT here yesterday.

The diplomas offered by NMIT will be awarded by Maritiem Instituut Williams Barentsz and Maritiem Instituut De Ruyter, renowned Dutch maritime training institutes under the University of Applied Science Hogeschool, the Netherlands. “NMIT will play a significant role in nurturing well-trained maritime professionals in Malaysia to meet increasing demand for industry experts worldwide,” Razali added. — Bernama
