GETTING READY: Workers hang the lanterns at the CNY Bazaar at Kingsway.

MIRI: The Gong Xi Fa Cai (CNY) Bazaar along the high street here had come to life with some 260 stalls opening for business last night.

The rest of the stalls will start their business on Jan 17 and will operate daily until New Year’s Eve on Jan 22.

The CNY Bazaar is jointly organised by Miri City Council (MCC) and the Miri Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCCI) to make Miri City a vibrant place to live and visit, and to showcase the rich cultures and traditions of the city.

A spokesperson for the organisers told thesundaypost yesterday that the bazaar held annually serves as a one-stop centre for the public, particularly the Chinese community, to buy all they need for their CNY celebration. It is also an opportunity to provide an alternative venue for the business community to cater to the buying spree of the Chinese and this should help the traders’ business.

Items on sale range from food and drinks, decorative items, potted plants, handicrafts, paintings to clothing.

They will also be daily entertainment from 7pm to 11.30pm featuring the multi-cultures of Mirians to showcase the rich traditions and cultures of the Chinese community.

Naturally, there will be lion and dragon dances.

Members of the public are encouraged to come and witness the event. Admission is free.

The Minister for Energy, Green Technology and Water, Datuk Seri Peter Chin has been invited to officiate at the function on Jan 20 at 8pm.
