Tourism, no politics, says top travel agent

SIBU: A longtime travel agent here has suggested that politics be put aside by forming an umbrella group of tourism players to put Sibu on the world map.

Giving the suggestion yesterday, managing director of Equitorial Tours and Travel Sdn Bhd Robert Tan said this would enable tourism events to be promoted in a more systematic manner.

He added that this was even more important when the renovated airport is ready soon.

“An umbrella body needs to be formed to gather all the tourism players here to give their input to thrust Sibu forward.” Adding that there should be no elements of politics involved.

The members, he figured, could comprise transport companies, hoteliers, travel agents, airport personnel, among others.

He added that the umbrella body would help ensure tourism events here are conducted systematically.

“This means that we need to sit down and plan the calendar of events and not wait until the last minute. We need to give tourists ample time to book their tickets and make necessary preparations.”

He bemoaned that tourists would shy away if the airfares were costly.

“That is why they need to book in advance to take advantage of the cheap airfares and book accommodation.”

Tan was optimistic that more people would be encouraged to visit Sibu with the good air connectivity and a newly renovated airport.

He suggested that the relevant authorities approach international airlines to boost Sibu’s air connectivity given the soon available upgraded airport.
