KUCHING: Two junior players from the Kuching Badminton Association (KBA) had a pleasant surprise while training at Dewan Stapok recently.

Kenny Liew and Yii Zhi Yong were each presented with a badminton racket by KBA treasurer David Chang, who made a surprise visit to the hall behalf of the president Tan Joo Phoi.

Liew reached the Boys Under-11 singles and doubles finals while Yii was a finalist in the Boys Under-11 doubles in the State Junior Selection (II) Tournament at Sarawak Badminton Association (SBA) Hall from Dec 16 to 18.

The rackets were a reward for the young shuttlers’ dedication and loyalty as well as their good results.

Liew and Yii are among six KBA players who will represent Sarawak in the 100Plus National Junior Circuit (Sabah-Sarawak Zone) at SBA Hall on Feb 10 and 12.

They made the cut by finishing as runners-up or semi-finalists in their respective categories.

Together with Brian Kho, the duo will compete in the Boys’ Under-11. Gladys Tan will feature in the Girls Under-11

while Ng Ji Chien and Chong Jia Ming in the Girls Under-16.

They are the core members of KBA-Sarawak State Sports Council Development Centre and Centre of Excellence badminton development programme which started about two years ago under coach Johnny Ng.
