MIRI: Neighbourhood Committees (RTs) should diversify the activities they organise according to the needs of their communities.

Department of National Unity and Integration (JPNIN) state director Dirwana Azool said RTs could also set up bureaus relevant to their areas.

“Youth, women’s and children’s bureaus are the best examples of how the responsibilities and work specification could be divided,” he said adding that RTs should also hold annual events.

Dirwana said all RT committee members play vital roles in ensuring their organisations move forward.

“Do not become chairmen or committee members just by holding positions without having any activities or programmes,” he said during a New Year gathering for RTs, nurseries and voluntary patrol schemes (SRS) here on Wednesday.

“Do not rely only on government grants given through JPNIN. Activities and programmes can also be carried out by getting assistance from other agencies or departments. Assistance can also be in other forms, not just financial. It could be in the form of equipment and manpower.”

During the event, quality awards were presented to outstanding RTs.

Among those present were JPNIN state deputy director Delin Liet Blaun and Miri unity officer Siti Soffiah Muhammad Taib.
