Central Kalimantan to witness boost in rattan industry

PALANGKA RAYA: Central Kalimantan will see the opening of several rattan industry centres this year, as part of a government policy to develop economic activities, as well as to attract investors, Indonesia’s Antara News Agency reported.

Central Kalimantan vice governor H Achmad Diran said the government’s policy was to stop the export of raw rattan and semi-finished rattan goods as of January 1 this year. From now, Indonesia would only export finished rattan goods such as crafted chairs, tables, lamp posts and so forth, he said.

In preparation of those centres, 50 to 100 experts in rattan processing or rattan goods-making would come to Central Kalimantan to train local people in turning raw rattan into exportable finished goods, the news agency quoted Achmad recently.

With the existence of the rattan industry centres, East Kalimantan which was the biggest rattan producing region in Indonesia could benefit optimally from the natural resource.

The sales price of raw rattan would also rise thus making rattan cultivation in the province more attractive to investors, he said.

No less than 80 per cent of world rattan production came from Indonesia and over 40 per cent of Indonesia`s rattan output was cultivated in Central Kalimantan, he added.

To support the development of the rattan industry in the province, the East Kalimantan governor had issued an instruction to all government agancies and offices in the region to use rattan-based or processed rattan goods, Achmad said. — Bernama
