SIBU: Recipients of 1Malaysia People Assistance (BR1M) were yesterday advised not to gamble away the cash aid or misuse them, like buying liquor.

“They should give priority to their children’s educational needs.

“It would set a bad precedence if they gamble their money on cock fighting or use it to buy alcoholic drinks,” a local community leader Penghulu James Semilan told reporters.

“Spend the money wisely and prudently. Get into the habit of saving up for rainy days,” he added.

Another community leader, Penghulu Jeffery Sut, had this advice to give: “Doesn’t mean that when we receive the RM500 cash aid, we have to spend it all at once. That is not the way how we should go about doing things.

“Instead, we need to embed in ourselves the habit of saving and plan what we need to use the money for. Such aid does not come by every day.”

Recipients, he said, should be thankful for the aid as it showed the government’s commitment to bring betterment to the people.

Meanwhile, on the Amanah Rakyat 1Malaysia Scheme (Sara 1Malaysia) launched by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, he said it was very beneficial to the community in that it helped cultivate the habit of saving up for rainy days.

Meanwhile, scores of applicants knocked on the district office’s door yesterday to check on their application status.

On Monday, a large crowd swarmed the district office to make the same queries.

Sibu District Officer Wong See Meng revealed that a total of 6,198 successful applicants in Sibu District would receive their vouchers in the first batch.

He added that about 2,000 letters had been delivered to notify the successful applicants.
