MIRI : Dayang Enterprise Holdings Bhd (Dayang) through its wholly owned subsidiary DESB Marine Services Sdn Bhd (DESB Marine), created history as the only company to own MV Dayang Topaz (Dayang Topaz), a vessel built and delivered under the new maritime specifications.

Dayang Topaz, the fifth workboat is built to comply with the Special Purpose Ship Code (SPS Code), the latest maritime requirement for vessels operating for the oil and gas industry. Among the special requirements are that the living accomodation must be above the sea-water level and the vessel must be double-hulled and double-skinned.

Executive deputy chairman of Dayang Group James Ling, during the official protocol delivery of the vessel yesterday, believed that Dayang Topaz was the first ever such vessel to be built and delivered in South East Asia.

The building of Dayang Topaz was part of the upstream oil and gas services provider’s continuous development programme for DESB Marine to support the growing oil and gas companies in the country and the region.

“The evidence is clear – from merely two workboats and a supply vessel, we have expanded our fleet to seven at present – Dayang Pertama, Dayang Berlian, Dayang Maju, Dayang Nilam, Dayang Zamrud, Dayang Cempaka and now our latest jewel, Dayang Topaz,” said Ling.

According to Ling, over the last few months during the construction stage of the vessel, there have been numerous enquiries and inspection visits by prospective charterers, some coming from as far as Brunei and overseas.

“Obviously, we have not firmed up any of these charters yet as we have to be very selective in view of the fact that this is a brand new vessel built according to the latest specifications.

“We are very confident that she will be offered employment soon as there are numerous suitable up-coming jobs for her in the current bullish oil and gas sector here and abroad,” he added.

At this juncture, Ling said that Dayang’s track record had been commendable and remarkable. In terms of safety record, it currently had exceeded the 24 million man-hours LTI free, an all time high record for the company.

In term of financials, Dayang had achieved an unaudited profit after tax of more than RM84 million in 2011, another record in the history of the Dayang Group.

“In terms of contract order book, we currently have RM1.6 billion to last until 2016, also an all time high record. All these are largely made possible through our clients’ strong guidance and support. We would like to acknowledge our sincere thanks and appreciation to them for their kind cooperation and patience as well,” said Ling.

Pointing out that the business environment we are in was very tough, competitive and challenging and there were no hand-outs from clients, Ling said Dayang ran its business very tightly and professionally.

“Like wise, we have to work very hard to earn our money! We have to adapt well in order to do well. Having said that, we are proud that we have adapted much better than some of our competitors in the industry,” he added.

Also present were executive chairman of Shin Yang Group of companies Tan Sri Datuk Ling Chiong Ho and group managing director of Dayang Enterprise Holdings Bhd Tengku Dato’ Yusof Tengku Ahmad Shahruddin.
