Hampers popular as CNY gifts

MIRI: Chinese New Year (CNY) festival starts early this year, and the appearance of CNY hampers heralds the coming of the annual celebration.
“We started preparing in December last year, because Chinese New Year starts early this year,” said Chop Soon Seng proprietress Lim Khim Choo.
Lim expects to sell about the same number of hampers this year, in the region of a thousand.
“We are now using more of the wooden gift baskets from China for our CNY gift hampers,” she said.
The gift hamper is a convenient way to package gift items attractively into a basket and is a popular way for events organisers to award participants.
She also takes customised orders from companies as fruit hampers, or gift hampers to be used in lucky draws.
“This year, our prices start from RM118 to RM3,888, which we have lowered from RM6,000 previously,” she added.
A highly enterprising lady, originally from Batu Niah, Lim enjoys being actively involved in her business despite being in her 60’s and without any help from her family members including three children who are working elsewhere.
From a small shop in 1980, she moved to the ground floor of Soon Hup Shopping Complex, in the same building as Mega Hotel, about 17 years ago operating a 24-hour convenience store, and over time expanded to other businesses selling other items in the same complex.
