MIRI: A safe city attracts tourists by the thousands whose tourism dollars end up in the it’s coffer.
Assistant Minister of Communications Datuk Lee Kim Shin said tourists were known to frequent places they knew were safe and would not mind making repeated visits.
“We want this city to continue to be safe for the people and tourists alike; thanks to the police for making it that way,” he said after a meeting with new police chief, ACP Mun Kock Keong, at the Resident’s office yesterday. Also present were the Resident Antonio Kathi Galis and his deputies Emang Oyo and Abdul Aziz Yusof.
According to Lee, it was important that the city’s crime index was low to enable continued visits by tourists especially those from Brunei.
He said the previous police chief, ACP Jamaludin Ibrahim, had done a tremendous job in maintaining a low crime index here.
Mun, Lee said, would do the same given his vast experience as Kuching police chief before he came here.
On another subject, Lee said the city certainly needed more Mobile Police Vehicles (MPVs) to patrol areas in the city’s outskirts like Tudan and Desa Senadin.
He also suggested that the police send their traffic personnel to direct traffic flow in Pujut 7 and Desa Senadin during peak hours, given the hectic pace of development in the areas.
Mun meanwhile said he would work with the authorities here to ensure Miri continue to be a pleasant and safe place to live and work in.
