Hundreds converge on Miri District Office to check BR1M application status

CROWD CONTROL: A policeman speaks to members of the public gathered at the Miri District Offi ce compound.

MIRI: Hundreds of Bantuan Rakyat 1Malaysia (BR1M) applicants thronged the Miri District Office yesterday from as early as 7am to check on the status of their applications.

The crowd was so huge that the police and Malaysian Red Crescent (MRC) Miri Chapter members had to be assigned to ensure orderly behaviour.

Miri Resident Antonio Kahti Galis said applicants had been crowding the office since Wednesday due to poor understanding on the correct procedures to check applications and claim vouchers.

“Once given the list of successful applicants by the Ministry of Finance, our staff will telephone the applicants concerned to collect their vouchers from our offices or during special events like what we had in the Dewan Suarah on the 20th of January.

“However, because many are excited to know their status, they’ve come in big numbers
since Wednesday,” he told reporters after speaking to the crowd yesterday.

Among those present to help explain things to the applicants were Datuk Sebastian Ting — political secretary to the Minister of Energy, Green Technology and Water — and Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) assistant secretary-general Karambir Singh Honey.

Antonio added that only the remaining 400 successful applicants who did not collect their vouchers on Jan 20, would be allowed to collect their vouchers from the Miri District Office today (Jan 27).

He explained that on Jan 20, only 600 of the total 1,000 successful applicants notified collected their vouchers.

They were among the 4,749 first batch of successful applicants.

“The remaining applicants will be notified by phone or they can either contact the hotline of our office at (085) 415140, or they can also check their
names at the Dewan Suarah Miri, where the list will be put up the latest by noon on Sunday (Jan 29).

“If your names are listed, then come and collect your vouchers on Monday (Jan 30) starting at 8am,” he said.

Those whose names are not on the list, he said, should wait patiently as their names might be included in the second or subsequent batches of successful applicants.

For the Baram and Sibuti parliamentary constituencies, disbursement of the vouchers would be carried out by their respective District Offices.

Vouchers will be handed out until March 15 and would be valid for redemption until April 15 at any Bank Simpanan Nasional (BSN), CIMB or Maybank branch, or during special events to handover the vouchers.
