KUCHING: Several burglaries were reported to the police in the space of 24 hours on Friday after thieves took advantage of homeowners’ absence to cart off valuables.

One of the break-ins took place at a Jalan Song house belonging to a teacher, in her 50s, who made the discovery upon her return late Friday night.

The thieves gained entry by forcing open the front door, before ransacking the house of an estimated RM20,000 in gold and diamond jewellery.

Another case which occurred in Batu Kawah saw thieves escape with a flat screen television, DVD player and over RM1,000 in cash.

The owner, in his 40s, said he arrived home on Friday evening to find thieves had entered his house by forcing open the kitchen door.

The third incident saw a wooden house at Jalan Kung Phin broken into when the owner and his father were away for two hours.

The owner, in his 30s, said they arrived home around 9pm to find thieves had entered the house after removing the glass panes from a kitchen window and prying open the security grille.

They took a plasma television and set of car keys.

An engineer lost cash and mobile phones early Friday when her house at Kampung Sinjan was broken into.

She only realised the break-in when she noticed her handbag missing and saw signs of forced entry into her house.

Her handbag contained a Blackberry smartphone, three mobile phones, RM500 cash and personal documents.
