KUCHING: The Sibu Amateur Swimming Association (Sasa) will be hosting the Sukma XV Time Trial Selection at Bukit Lima Swimming Complex in Sibu from Feb 10-12.

Amateur Swimming Association of Sarawak (Asas) secretary Paul Lim said yesterday that Asas had informed all the divisional affiliates to send their swimmers for the event.

“We should know the actual number of swimmers from all divisional affiliates by Feb 1, which is the closing date for submission of entries,” said Lim.

He said only those swimmers who had competed at SEA Games or other international championships need not attend the time trial.

“For those who have competed in previous Sukma or national championships, there is no automatic tickets and they still need to undergo the time trial in order to be considered for the Sarawak Sukma XV swimming team,” added Lim.

Sarawak did not send any team for aquatics (swimming and diving) to Sukma XIV in Kuala Lumpur last year.

In Sukma XIII in Melaka two years ago, the girls swimmers were Erika Kong, Hii Siew Siew, Angela Chieng, Esther Yii, Grace Yii, Nita Wong while the boys included Ling Neng Ching, Tang Chong Heng, Vernon Lee, Daniel Goh and Jason Jiang Kulay.

They captured four gold, seven silver and five bronze medals to finish third overall in the swimming competition.

Meanwhile, national swimmer Erika Kong of Kuching Amateur Swimming Association (Kasa) 2010 will also be going to swim in some other peripheral events at the time trial although she has already automatically qualified for being a SEA Games swimmer.

Other Kasa 2010 swimmers confirmed attending the trial are Roydon Ong, Brian Chua, Sarah Ann Thorpe and Rhona Lai.

It was learnt that Kota Samarahan Amateur Swimming Association (Kotas) would be sending            four or five of their best swimmers to Sibu.

Sasa, being the organiser and host of the time trial, are expected to field more swimmers than other affiliates while Miri Amateur Swimming Association (Masa) would be participating too.
