Seri Urai crowned DBKU ‘King of the River’

KUCHING: Team Putri Berkaya Seri Urai was crowned the 2012 Regatta Bandarayaku ‘King of the River’ after winning the challenging four kilometres Men’s 30 paddlers grand event at the Kuching Esplanade yesterday.

The team easily triumphed over second placed Panglima Alet to walk home with cash RM1,000.

Panglima Alet took home RM800 while third placed Ong Bak 1 walked away with RM500.

“Our win today shows that hardwork and discipline is the key to our victory.”

We did not depend solely on stamina to win but also our techniques on rowing our boat,” commented Supian Bahron, Putri Berkaya Seri Urai manager.

As winner of last year’s competition, Putri Berkaya Seri Urai went into this competition as favourites.

“I am also happy in spite the fact that my team is made up of local boys from Kampung Sungai Bedil and Kampung Sungai Tebelu.  Some of the teams competing today have the services of foreign paddlers from Indonesia,” he added.

The two-day event, organised by Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) was divided into four categories -the Men’s 10 paddlers, Men’s 15 paddlers, Men’s 20 paddlers and Men’s 30 paddlers.

Sarawak Minister of  Housing and Tourism Datuk Amar Abang Johari officiated at the closing ceremony at  Kuching Esplanade.
