KUALA LUMPUR: Shopping is the last thing on the mind of a single mother here who is one of the recipients of the RM500 1Malaysia People’s Aid (BR1M) scheme.

Aminah Mohd Zain, 58, said she would instead save the money for the future.

Expressing her gratitude for the assistance, Aminah said the money would help ease the burden borne by her family.

“I’ll save the money; I still have children studying in school and in university,” she said when met at a BR1M distribution event, here yesterday.

When asked whether she would spend some of the money shopping, Aminah said she would not do
so.

“Buying clothes or other things is not important. For us, we’ll save the money, and earn some interest from the savings,” she said.

For senior citizen Abdullah Darman, 80, the money would help his family to make ends meet.

“I have six children but their income is small and irregular. Some of them work as labourers, earning about RM200 a month, hardly enough to meet our daily expenditure,” he said, describing the assistance as a
blessing.

Meanwhile, a person with disability, S Ganeshan, 36, said he would used the RM500 as a “seed money” for his savings.

“I couldn’t work at the moment. With this money, I can take some comfort knowing that I have money in my savings,” said Ganeshan who receives RM150 a month from the Welfare Department.

Some 1,800 people received their aid at the event comprising senior citizens, single mothers and people with disabilities.
