KUCHING: Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party (SPDP) president Tan Sri William Mawan Ikom yesterday called upon the administrator of the ‘Tan Sri William Mawan Ikom’ Facebook account to withdraw the name from the social network service.

Mawan, who is also Minister of Social Development, said the account was neither his nor did he direct anyone to create it.

As of yesterday he said he did not know who created the account and worst, the page had been left unattended for several months.

The account contained numerous articles from The Borneo Post in relation to the recent SPDP leadership crisis and each of them was followed by comments from other FB account holders.

Mawan said: “It is better for the Facebook account to be deleted because I do not want people to paste or write nasty comments about other politicians be they from the government or opposition.”

He said the crisis in SPDP was over and the party was looking forward to the next general election with renewed strength and enthusiasm in line with the BN spirit of solidarity.

He said he has already directed the BN New Media Unit (BN UMB) linked to SPDP to deal with situation just in case comments in the FB account gets out of hand.

A quick check on the page yesterday saw many one-sided comments that appeared friendly to SPDP and Mawan but critical towards the five partyless BN elected representatives.

It also states that 62 people liked the page while three were talking about it.

SPDP has just comes out from its worst crisis.

Five of its office bearers who turned against the party leadership have been sacked.

The internal squabble for leadership took two years’ long to be resolved.

The BN has allocated Mas Gading, Saratok, Baram and Bintulu parliamentary seats, which will feature in the next general election, to SPDP.

The party has yet to recommend to the BN it candidate to retain Mas Gading following the termination of membership of incumbent Datuk Dr Tiki Lafe.

Even so, SPDP has announced many times that it will recommend the renomination of vice-president Jelaing Mersat (Saratok); senior vice-president Datuk Jacob Dungau Sagan (Baram) and treasurer-general Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing (Bintulu) to contest in the next parliamentary election.

Jelaing and Sagan are both deputy federal ministers while Tiong is chairman of the BN Backbenchers Club.
