KAPIT: The government will be carrying out a study on Chinese youths in the state soon to find out their likes and dislikes, their hobbies, interests, education levels, and employment status.
Youth Development Advisor in the Chief Minister’s Department, Larry Sng Wei Shien, who revealed this last Sunday, however, did not state the primary objective of the study other than to ‘scout their potential’.
“The Youth Department will carry out this study on Chinese youths. The respondents would be those in the 14 to 44 years old age group.
“This group makes up about 44 per cent of the total Chinese population in the state,” he said at the Foochow Chinese New Year gathering here which was attended by about 500 people.
On the Larry Sng Education Fund 2011, he said he had earlier in the day distributed aids of RM500 each to 68 individuals who were pursuing their studies at institutions of higher learning, including universities.
Since the introduction of the Fund, more than a thousand students had benefitted from it.
He explained that the aid was meant to benefit students from Pelagus in terms of alleviating their financial burden in their pursuit of higher education.
Pelagus assemblyman George Lagong, who also spoke at the gathering which was held at the Civic Centre, lauded the Chinese community for engaging other communities during their celebrations.
“I noticed that when you (Chinese community) organise events to celebrate the Chinese New Year, you always make it a point to respect the elders and share information among the people. In addition, there is also a giving of cash incentives for those who did well in their studies.
“Such a practice should be preserved.”
George also gave the thumbs up to the elders in the Chinese community for their willingness to pass the baton to the younger generation when the time was right so that there would be continuity in their contributions to the society.
“Kapit is prosperous today, and the Chinese community has played significant roles in this. I hope you’ll continue to ensure that developments in Kapit would continue to prevail in the future.”
