Tabung Haji beefing up database security to stem express haj

YAN: Lembaga Tabung Haji is beefing up its database security by upgrading its computerised system to overcome weaknesses in haj management to stem “express haj”.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Jamil Khir Baharom said “express haj” where pilgrims on the waiting list were offered the chance to jump queue were detected by Tabung Haji as early as 2010.

He said Tabung Haji had penalised the staff involved in the illegal activities while further action would be taken by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission.

However, he said, the illegal activities did not affect Tabung Haji’s image and revenue as its profit last year increased by six per cent.

“This is not fraud but cheating by those, who wanted to quickly by jumping the queue, and my advice to would-be pilgrims is to be patient,” he told reporters at the Jerai parliamentary constituency Chinese New Year open house in Guar Chempedak near here yesterday.

Present were Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Seri Chor Chee Heung, Kedah MCA chairman Datuk Chong Itt Chew and Gurun assemblyman Dr Leong Yong Kong.

Jamil Khir said the support from the Chinese community in the state for Barisan Nasional was on the rise as it was buoyed by the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak’s leadership and transformation programmes.

At the function, Jamil Khir and Chor handed over funds totalling RM190,000 to the Chinese community in the Jerai parliamentary constituency for voluntary and religious activities, and Chinese schools. –Bernama
