Association suggests contractors maintain 1Borneo toilets

KOTA KINABALU: Quality Restroom Association of Malaysia (QRAM) has suggested that maintenance of all toilets at 1Borneo Hypermall be given to contractors if the in-house staff are unable to maintain cleanliness.

Its national and Sabah vice chairman, Damian Chai, said outside maintenance might be the best solution to solve dirty toilet problems in shopping malls which had received many complaints not only from shoppers but also from tourists.

“The standard of toilets in Sabah is much better than in Peninsular Malaysia and this augurs well for City Hall’s plan as Kota Kinabalu is hosting the World Toilet General Assembly in November.

“The event is scheduled to be held at 1Borneo Hypermall but with the condition of the toilets, I am afraid we will receive negative critics from representatives who will attend the assembly,” he said during an inspection yesterday.

QRAM, with Health Department officers from City Hall, yesterday inspected all toilets in the shopping mall, including VIP toilets which are charging RM1 per entry.

Chai said toilets at 1Borneo Hypermall were in good condition but maintenance was not done properly, adding that the maintenance team should give priority to fix any leakage and damage of water taps, pipes or hoses to ensure the walls and floors were dry and easy to clean.

During the inspection yesterday, most of the water hoses inside the toilet rooms were damaged.

Chai also suggested that all pipes must be installed with a stopper so that users can control the flow of water.

All VIP toilets at 1Borneo Hypermall were downgraded from five to four stars by City Hall officers, while most of the normal toilets were downgraded from two stars to zero, a strong warning to the maintenance and management teams to fix all damage and leakage as soon as possible.

Chai said Sabah was the only state in Malaysia which had implemented the toilet star rating exercise but it did not mean that the performance was only during competition because the rating exercise was on going.
