MIRI: PAS Miri chief cum PAS Sarawak deputy commissioner III Jofri Jaraiee yesterday explained that the statement
made by the party on Valentine’s Day was not meant for non-Muslims.
In saying that the party’s views had been misconstrued by some quarters, he said their response had given the impression that PAS was out to stop followers of other religions from celebrating the day.
“As a result of their misunderstanding of this, they said that PAS has departed from its struggle, which is to give religious freedom to all believers in this country,” he argued.
According to Jofri, PAS did not forbid people of other faiths from celebrating the day.
“It is clear, PAS has never said Valentine’s Day should be forbidden,” he claimed.
He explained that only Muslims were prohibited from celebrating Valentine’s Day as it was against Islamic teachings.
“Hopefully, this thing will not cause misunderstanding between Muslims and non-Muslims in this country because we have to respect each other’s religious beliefs,” he added.
