KUCHING: Former Wanita SUPP chief Suzanne Lee and Maurice Joannes Giri, who is PBB Machan branch deputy chairman, were sworn in as political secretaries to the chief minister here yesterday.

Local Government and Community Development Minister Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh confirmed that Lee was his nominee.

“Yes, you can say that I nominated her name to the chief minister for consideration because she is well qualified. Apart from having vast experience in politics as the immediate past Wanita SUPP chief, she also holds a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree.”

Lee, 51, and Maurice, 50, were both sworn in before Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Alfred Jabu Numpang at Wisma Bapa Malaysia.

Their appointments bring to 24 the total number of such appointments in the state. Five of them are from SUPP, SPDP (four), PRS (three) and the rest from PBB.

Lee, a mother of three, became involved in politics in 1987 and became Wanita SUPP chief in 2009. She is active in several social and charitable organisations.

READY FOR NEW ROLE: Maurice looks on as Jabu signs his letter of appointment.

She was awarded the Most Outstanding Women award by the Federal Chinese Association Miri in 2008. Her swearing in yesterday was to take over from Cheng Yee to fill the quota for SUPP.

Besides Lee, the other state political secretaries from SUPP are Andrew Shilling Banggit, Phang Dah Nan, Ku Fut Po and Sih Hua Tong.

Maurice has been a PBB member since 10 years ago. He was elected to his present position in 2010. A human resource consultant, he holds a Master of Science degree in training and human resources from Leicester University.
