Sarawak shuttlers ruleState juniors shine in Grand Finals qualifiers against Sabah

KUCHING: Jong Wee Fook and Wilson Lau Ngie Ding both smashed their way to a double as Sarawak dominated the Sabah-Sarawak Zone Qualifying for the Grand Finals of the National Junior Circuit Badminton Championship by capturing 10 out of 16 categories competed.

This was an improved result as compared to last year where Sarawak only won eight out of 16 categories.

State Sukma XV shuttler Wee Fook displayed good form in the Boys U18 singles final to beat Sabah’s Anthony Samin Jr, the second seed from Sabah, 21-10, 22-24, 21-13.

He then teamed up with James Liaw in the Boys U18 doubles as the top seeds to defeat second seeds Brandon Caine Mail-Tan Jinn Ye of Sabah 21-11, 21-19 in the final.

Wilson Lau, who did not drop a single set in the Boys U14 singles contest, bagged his first title when he chalked up a convincing 21-13, 21-15 win over teammate Aaron Chieng in the final.

He then partnered Ong Yen Chang in the Boys U14 doubles final to see off Sabah pair of Eddrall Atek and Goh Ting Yu 21-17, 26-24 to complete his double in the tournament played at Sarawak Badminton Association (SBA) Hall.

Sarawak swept the singles and doubles in the Boys U16 categories, with Clement Chieng winning the singles and Donaven Sujang Majang-Kam Sing Siong taking the doubles title.

In the Girls U14 doubles contest, unseeded pair Kam Wei Li and Yong Ping Ping were 21-17, 22-20 winners in an all-Sarawakian final against Chan Pei Xin and Jee Yu Fei.

The Girls U14 singles final was won by Florence Tiong Yee Wen who beat teammate Valerie Liong Xing Yuen 22-20, 27-21 and 21-10.

Sarawak’s Felicia Fong Xin Hui and Flora Fong Xin Jie, who are sisters, were the winners of the eight-team Girls U12 doubles competition, beating Sabah’s Jessica Calvin-Macnella Michele 21-13, 17-21 and 21-11 in the final.

Syafiq Azhar Haizan also impressed by winning the Boys U12 singles title after beating Ling Dai Hau of Sabah 21-11, 21-17 in the final.

Sabah players ended their campaign here with victories in the Girls U18 doubles (Cheong Sing Yueh-Ester Leevinia Smith), Girls U16 doubles (Joanne Chai-Teh Xiao Xuan), Girls U16 singles (Donetta Moisol), Boys U12 doubles (Ling Dai Hau-Syafiq Serikin) and Girls U12 singles (Tan Yun Ying).

The champions and runners-up of Boys/Girls U18, 16, 14 singles and doubles, Boys/Girls U12 doubles as well as champions, runners-up and semi-finalists of Boys/Girls U12 singles qualify for the grand finals of the national age-meet to be held in Kuala Lumpur from June 20-24.
