Government aware of satellite map access

KUALA LUMPUR: The government has filtered sensitive defence information and areas before allowing public access to the Defence Geospatial Division of the Department of Survey and Mapping Malaysia (Jupem) online websites.
(Geospatial refers to the provision of geographic intelligence in support of national security) Natural Resources and Environment Deputy Minister Tan Sri Joseph Kurup said Malaysia was internationally recognised for possessing the latest technology and effective methods to map geospatial for industry and defence usage.
“Before all information is shown to the public, any sensitive aspect would be filtered first, and this will always be the priority,” he told reporters after launching an international symposium, ‘Spatially Enabled Government and Society’ here yesterday.
The two-day symposium starting yesterday, brings together various international experts, including locals, Geospatial data owned by Jupem involves seven billion maps and land scales in this country, which were taken from satellite and broadcast to the internet for public access.
Meanwhile, Jupem director-general Datuk Prof Dr Abdul Kadir Taib said there were no issues regarding search engine Google which screened Malaysia’s satellite map. — Bernama
