Couple among four under drug trafficking probe

KOTA KINABALU: Four people, including a couple, may face the death penalty after police seized 661.31 grams of cannabis.

Deputy city police chief Superintendent M. Chandra said a 39-year-old man was arrested together with his 21-year-old girlfriend and two other women, aged 18 to 26, in a house at Jalan Tuaran on Feb 12 around 5am.

“The raid was made after police were tipped off about the activity in the house.

“In the raid, police found numerous packets of cannabis weighing 661.31 grams with a market price at RM3,500,” he said at a press conference at the city police headquarters in Karamunsing here yesterday.

Chandra said investigation revealed that the man is said to be a local while the women are from a neighbouring country.

All the suspects have been remanded where the case will be investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries the mandatory death penalty, if found guilty.

The suspects are also being investigated under Section 6 and Section 15 (1) (a) of the same Act for possessing and taking the drugs respectively.

Meanwhile, Chandra said police detained 83 people for drugs and prostitution activities since the ‘Ops Tapis’ which is confined to Kampung Air from Jan 25, this year.

“Out of the figure, 78 of them – 66 men and 12 women – were arrested for drug consumptions while five others were detained for drug possession,” he said, adding that 80 per cent of the 12 women detained are prostitute.
