Muhyiddin repeats call to improve quality of national education system

GEORGE TOWN: Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin today repeated his call for the quality of national education system to be improved to produce quality human capital capable of steering Malaysia towards becoming a fully-developed nation.

Muhyiddin, who is also Education Minister, said quality was the most important aspect in the national education system and the efforts to improve it must be viewed seriously.

“We have formed a task force to study various aspects of national education and co-curriculum, Razak Report and the teaching of Science and Mathematics in English,” he said when opening the Empowerment of Penang Teachers’ Professionalism programme here Saturday.

Last Tuesday, Muhyiddin made the same call when addressing about 5,000 teachers from Kedah and Perlis at a similar event in Jitra.

He said the efforts to improve the quality of the national education system must be mounted by all quarters, especially teachers.

“I admit that this is a very big challenge because there are many more things to be done to assist the country achieve its vision to be a fully developed nation,” he said.

Muhyiddin said teachers must also be more creative and innovative in teaching in order to produce quality human capital.

“We don’t want to produce new generations that are too rigid and exam-oriented. That is why the Education Ministry introduced the One Student One Sport policy. It is to boost students’ marketability,” he explained.

Muhyiddin said the policy compelled students to participate in at least one sport to help the teachers identify their true potentials. –Bernama
