KUCHING: Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) is planning to introduce special bicycle lanes in Petra Jaya here.

Its chief deputy director Kartina Zamhari told reporters yesterday that the plan was currently being worked out and that for a start, only certain routes would have these special lanes.

If the pilot project is proven to be successful in both usage and safety, she said the lanes would be extended to other parts of the city to promote cycling among Kuchingites.

“The introduction of bicycle lanes is part of DBKU’s Safe  City plan. Along with the lanes, the council will also introduce bicycle parking bays at strategic spots such as public transportation hubs.

“This is to promote cycling and a healthy lifestyle,” said Kartina when met at the launch of the ‘Let’s share the road’ campaign at the esplanade at Jalan Gambier here.

The campaign was organised by DBKU and Kuching South City Council (MBKS) in collaboration with the Sarawak Cycling Association.

She added that the council would work closely with the police to draw up plans for the bicycle parking bays and bicycle lanes to ensure the safety of cyclists and their properties.

It is also understood that the introduction of bicycle lanes and parking bays at strategic public transportation hubs would enable the city to combat traffic congestion, while promoting the usage of public transport.

Its other objective is to give the city an environment-friendly image.

Also present at the event was DBKU board member Peter Pui.
