MIRI: Some members of the public here are ready to give Sarawak Islamic Religious Department (Jais) a helping hand in curbing the activities of transvestites in the resort city.

City folk Mansor Mahdar, 50, yesterday said the time was right to rid society of this ‘social ills’ from worsening.

“I suggest JAIS expands its transvestite monitoring effort to Miri as well.

“We (Miri) are also facing the same problem.”

A local Malay daily recently quoted Assistant Minister in the Chief Minister’s Office Datuk Daud Abdul Rahman as saying that JAIS was working with the police and local authority to monitor the movements of transvestite in specific areas in the city.

This effort, he was quoted as saying, was to address public concern about the spike in immoral activities due to the presence of transvestites.

Mansor said transvestite offering ‘special services’ must be stopped as it would not only tarnish the good name of the city but was also against the teachings of Islam.

“No matter where you are people for sure will give a negative view of the immoral activities carried out by transvestites.

“We must never allow them to poison the mind of our young people.”

Housewife Sharron Khoo, who echoed Mansor’s stand on this issue, said the local authority must take stern action against those involved in adultery.

“They must take stern action by punishing them. Either fine them or force them to do community service.

“These punishments would not only teach them a lesson but would also lead them to the right path.”
