MIRI: The Sarawak State Sports Council (MSNS) and Miri Archery Association (MAA) is targeting a minimum of 10 archers from Miri to represent Sarawak in the Sukma XV in Pahang.MAA secretary David Ting said both sports bodies are in active collaboration to scout for new potential talents in archery.

“Through the joint efforts and hard work that we have put into, we hope it will bear fruitful returns toward improving and strengthening the sport of archery here,” Ting said during an archery demonstration and recruitment held at SMK St Joseph yesterday.

He added that currently MSNS and MAA are organising Youth Archery Development programme in eight schools in Miri division this year.

“So far we have held youth archery development programme at several primary and secondary schools such as Riam Road Secondary School, SMK St. Columba, SMK Chung Hwa, SMK Baru, SJK Chung Hwa and Sri Mawar primary school. The programme came into inception in 2001 and has produced many talented archers to represent not only Sarawak but also Malaysia in international tournament,” he revealed.

He also informed that the objective of the programme is to scout, train and develop talented students or archers to represent Miri and Sarawak in Sukma which is to be held in Pahang.

“Each participant under the development program will be given a special certificate for each level starting with Junior U-12, Level 1,2 and finally Level 3,” he added.

Ting said those who have the potentials will be given further training at the King’s Archery Sportcentre.

“We only limit to 50 secondary school students and 30 primary school pupils to go for the training. This is due to the limited number of coaches available as archery students needs to be trained on one-to-one basis,” he said.
