SIBU: Badminton enthusiasts in Sibu are in for a special treat as a doubles only tournament is set to be held from March 29 to April 1 at Thumb’s Up Badminton Academy here.
“The tournament is divided into three categories – 75 years per doubles and above (that is, the added up age of the two players must be at least 75), 85 years per doubles and above and 95 years per doubles and above,” informed event organising secretary Peter Ho who added that competition is open to all badminton enthusiasts.
“We particularly urge the bumiputera community to grab this opportunity to send in players and take part in the championship,” he said.
Thus far, Ho disclosed, they had received only four entries.
“It’s still early but we hope to attract as many teams as possible in order to make the meet interesting.”
Ho said each team would play against each other on league format.
“The first four teams in the group will advance to the next stage and the team that collected the highest score will be declared champion,” he revealed.
Each team format consists five doubles – Men’s Doubles, Veteran Men’s Doubles, Men’s Junior Doubles, Mixed Doubles and Men’s Junior Doubles.
For Men’s Doubles, the players must comprise one senior and one junior while the Veteran Men’s Doubles is open to all those born in 1972 and before. For Men’s Junior Doubles, it is open to all the local junior players while Mixed Doubles event is open to all local girls with one junior and one senior in a pair.
“Each team is only allowed to have one senior player who must play either in the first event or in the mixed doubles. The champion will get RM800 plus a trophy, first runner-up will get RM500 plus a trophy while second and third runners-up will get WAGI badminton racquets and trophies. The closing date is March 22. Entry fee is RM50 per team,” informed Ho.
The maximum number of teams allowed shall be 16 on a first come, first served basis.
“We reserve the right to cancel the tournament if there are less than eight teams participating the tournament.”
He said a team can only register a maximum of 15 players who must be from Kanowit, Sibu, Mukah or Dalat.
“A player shall be allowed to play only once in a tie, and league rules shall apply in the group stages. Entry forms are available from Thumb’s Up Academy,” said Ho.
