SIBU: National swimmers Hii Siew Siew from Sibu and Erika Kong from Kuching are among the 160 swimmers who will be taking part in the 39th Sarawak Age Group Swimming Championship at Bukit Lima Swimming Pool from Feb 24 to 26.

Two other notable swimmers to watch include Miri’s Tan Chong Heng and Kuching’s Bernan Lee.

“This is going to be an interesting meet and hopefully, members of the public and swimming enthusiasts here will turn up in full force to watch the competition,” Sibu Amateur Swimming Association (Sasa) president Daniel Ngieng told The Borneo Post yesterday.

Ngieng said the competition is divided into four categories – Boys’ and Girls’ U18, U15, U12 and U10.

A total of 132 events will be competed.

“For Boys’ and Girls’ U18, U15 and U12, the events to be competed include freestyles (50m, 100m, 200m, 400m and 800m), backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly (50m, 100m, 200m), individual medley (200m and 400m) and relays – 4 x 100 freestyle and 4 x 100m medley. For Boys’ and Girls’ U10, only 10 events will be competed. These include freestyle (50m, 100m, 200m), backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly (50m and 100m), individual medley (200m) and relays – 4 x 100m freestyle and 4 x 50m medley,” Ngieng informed.

Kapit Amateur Swimming Association (Asak), Bintulu Amateur Swimming Association (Basa), Kota Samarahan Amateur Swimming Association (Kotas), Miri Amateur Swimming Association (Masa), Kuching Amateur Swimming Association (Kasa) and Sibu Amateur Swimming Association (Sasa) are participating in the meet. Sarikei Amateur Swimming Association and Limbang Amateur Swimming Association are not sending any swimmers this year.

“Miri is sending the largest contingent with 45 swimmers followed by host Sibu with 34, Kotas with 31, Asak with 20, Kasa with 17 and Basa with 13. The meet would select swimmers to represent the state for the National Age-Group Swimming Championship at Bukit Jalil, Apr 6 – 8.

“Youth Advisor in the Chief Minister’s Department Larry Sng is expected to witness the championship on Feb 25 from 9.30 to 10.30am. SMC chairman Datuk Tiong Thai King will officiate at the closing on Feb 26 at 5 pm,” said Ngieng.

Meanwhile, Sasa coach Hii Hieng Chiong revealed that winners of the Sibu Age Group championship would be based on the time final.

He said there would not be any heat and the swimmers producing the best time in their respective heats would be judged the winner.

“If there are two winners in one event, which is very rare, then both will be proclaimed the winners and there will not be any number two,” he said, explaining that this would save time and cost.
