KUALA LUMPUR: For the first time, 71 male gymnasts are undergoing evaluation test sessions at the National Sports Council (NSC) gymnasium to unearth their potential and new talents.

NSC Back-up Athletes Preparation Department director Jefri Ngadirin said, the maiden programme involved male gymnasts from State Back-up, Regional Back-up and National Back-up centres.

He said the six-day training camp, beginning Feb 19, had received overwhelming response and hoped it could serve as the NSC’s annual programme.

He said the camp was among the national athletes’ preparation programme for the 2013 Myanmar and 2015 Singapore SEA Games, respectively.

“Besides the evaluation sessions, athletes will also attend other activities, including a training programme under former China national coach Gao Jian, who is also on the evaluation panel.

“I hope such efforts will overcome the shortage of gymnasts, especially those aged between 10 and 12,” added Jefri when contacted by Bernama here yesterday.

Meanwhile, the selection for elite and national junior gymansts is currently being held. — Bernama
