SEREMBAN: An orang asli who taps rubber for a living has  become the proud owner of a brand-new Mercedes Benz worth RM300,000 — with just a RM10 investment.

Last September, the 45-year-old from the Semelai orang asli community bought a Premium Savings Certificate (SSP) from Bank Simpanan Nasional (BSN) at the Triang BSN office in her home state.

She thought nothing of it — until she received news that she had struck the main prize in the BSN’s January 2012 draw — a gleaming Merc.

This also makes her the first orang asli to win the main prize in the SSP draw.

“I did not expect to win the main prize, a RM300,000 Mercedes Benz, as I bought the RM10 SSP at the insistence of a BSN officer.

“When BSN informed me of the win, I just could not believe my ears,” she told Bernama when met at the February 2012 draw in Terminal 2 here yesterday.

On whether she would use the car or sell it, Sapiah, from Kampung Bukit Gemuroh, Kerayong in Triang, said he had not made up his mind.

BSN confirmed that Sapiah was the first orang asli to win the main prize in the SSP draw.

Meanwhile, BSN is increasing the number of prizes to more than 37,000 worth more than RM4 million for SSP holders as incentive to encourage the public to save with SSP.

Besides increasing the number of prizes, BSN is also introducing two special draws with the SSP Ekstra to be held in March, June, September and December this year.

The SSP High Savers draw will be held in December.

Among the prizes offered are luxury cars such as Mercedes Benz E200CGI, BMW 523i, Mercedes Benz C200EL and gold bars. — Bernama
