MIRI: The police vow to work together with the city council to realise the ‘safe city’ concept and reduce further the crime rate index here.

Police chief ACP Mun Kok Keong revealed this when making a courtesy call of the mayor Lawrence Lai at his office here yesterday. He said they would enhance the safety and security aspect of the city to make it safe for locals and tourists alike.

Mun disclosed that the crime rate in the city was still under control. As of Feb 29 the crime rate was minus 17 per cent from the figure in the same period last year.

The serious crimes declined to minus 12 per cent while property crime minus 7 per cent.

On another subject, he said the police were making an extra effort to reduce the response time to distress call from members of the public – from 18 minutes (national standard) to 5-10 minutes here.

“Don’t be alarmed if we switch on our siren and beacon light from time to time to test our response time,” he added.

Mun also welcomed comment or complaints on misadventure or discipline issues of any police personnel here either through e-mail or short messaging services (sms). “You can come and see me in person. However, the information must be authentic and the person must be responsible of his action. Don’t complain if you are not sure or when the information comes from a third party.”
