Woman claims electricity mistakenly disconnected twice

MIRI: A woman from Pujut 3B claimed that Sesco mistakenly disconnected the electricity supply to her house for a second time.

She said the power supply company somehow managed to confuse her house with one which failed to settle electricity bills exceeding RM2,000 since last year.

“I can’t believe this is happening to me for the second time. It is ridiculous,” the woman, who requested anonymity, complained yesterday.

The woman said her family discovered the electricity supply had been cut off when she and her husband arrived home from work around 6pm on Tuesday.

“I noticed that the gate padlock was forced open when I arrived, but did not think much about it. Then, the lights did not come on after I flicked the switch and water was dripping out from our fridge. Things in my freezer had melted.

“I went out to check and saw a notice pasted on our metre box indicating that the power supply had been cut off due to outstanding bills. I was surprised because my husband always pays the bills on time,” she said.

After conducting some checks, the woman said they found that a copy of the bill, which came with the disconnection notice, was actually addressed to another house in Pujut.

She said her husband immediately contacted Sesco’s emergency line to have the power restored, but was told that the disconnection was carried out on the ‘correct’ house.

“My husband kept telling them that it is not our address on the bill but they would not listen.

“To make matters worse, my one-year-old baby was constantly crying because I could not boil water to make her milk or prepare food. We were left in the dark without electricity,” she complained.

She said her husband later managed to contact Sesco personnel in Kuching to explain their situation.

“I’m thankful that my power supply was restored though we waited in the dark for more than two hours.”

The woman added that a similar incident occurred last year, when their power supply was also cut due to the wrong house address.

“The incident last year was on a Saturday morning so we had time to sort things out and were not left in the dark. It was also due to an outstanding bill belonging to another address.

“I’m highlighting this to the media because I do not want it to happen to me for a third time,” she stressed.
